Poor Man's Salisbury Steak

We grew up poor and I be counted this being one in all these food we had a minimum of as soon as a week. Salisbury Steaks are primary to make, incredibly inexpensive, and loaded with flavor. It typically includes a do-it-yourself hamburger patty smothered in a prosperous gravy. The consistency is additional like a meatball than a hamburger although due to my mystery ingredient! (more on that below)
And in my humble opinion, it’s all of the time the finest while homemade!
Salisbury Steak Recipe

The first step to creating Salisbury steak is to make the hamburger patties. We all of the time used 70/30 floor red meat rising up as it was probably essentially the foremost inexpensive, but recently I desire to make use of a leaner percent like 90/10. I also desire to take my floor red meat out of the fridge about 30 minutes earlier than getting ready this so that the meat isn't cold.

A ordinary Salisbury steak makes use of breadcrumbs, but we by no means appeared to have these accessible rising up so my mother would use overwhelmed potato chips. I love the salty and crunchy element that the potato chips upload to this recipe. It’s my “secret ingredient” and in addition the place the identify “Poor Man’s Salisbury Steak” comes into play.

The meat is mixed with potato chips and seasonings, then shaped into hamburger patties. The patties are then fried in a skillet (I used a 12-inch) with the oil and butter till the juices now not run pink.

Remove the patties from the skillet after which drain off any extra grease.

Easy Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

One of my favourite elements of this meal is the gravy.  I love to cook dinner up a double batch and freeze it to make use of it other nights of the week.  To make the gravy, soar with the similar skillet you cooked the Salisbury steaks in.  With the temperature lowered to medium, upload within the sliced onions and cook dinner for about 3-5 minutes, or till they're golden brown and particularly soft.  Next, upload within the meat broth and Worcestershire. Once it's mixed you may upload within the cornstarch and stir everything till it involves a low boil and the sauce begins to thicken.  If you get to a level the place the sauce appears TOO thick, you may upload additional broth to thin it out.  Return the steaks to the gravy and spoon gravy over everything.

The cease outcome of this job is a mushy flavorful Salisbury Steak, smothered in a prosperous onion gravy. An primary and flavorful dinner!

Salisbury Steak

This recipe freezes well, so that you might definitely make a double batch for later within the week.  There are NULL ways for freezing:

Freeze the raw steaks after which thaw and comply with the relaxation of the recipe as listed.
Freeze the cooked steaks within the gravy, and the defrost them within the fridge and simmer in a pan till they're warmed through.
The absolute finest solution to serve Salisbury steak is over mashed potatoes. I also upload a vegetable part like garlic and parmesan roasted asparagus or brown butter brussel sprouts.
